Is a Mistake the End of the World?
Mistakes do not feel great for most people, typically. They can be embarrassing, and they may make you wonder if you’re cut out for this whole caregiving thing. But they can teach you a lot if you let them. Looking at your mistakes through a friendlier lens can help.
Here’s what you can do if you’re still coming to terms with the fact that mistakes keep happening.
You’re One Person
Something that caregivers tend to forget when they’re critiquing themselves is that they’re just one person. That matters more than you realize. You’re doing a lot as a caregiver and often you’re doing it completely on your own. Finding help in the form of elder care providers can make a huge difference and helps you to feel a lot less alone.
Frustration Causes Mistakes
Most people tend to make more mistakes when they’re feeling frustrated or upset and the same is true for caregivers. If you’ve been feeling more frustrated lately, or if making mistakes is what’s frustrating you, then you may need to give yourself some slack. Stepping back for a little while and allowing senior care providers to take over for a bit can also be a huge help.
Beating Yourself up Doesn’t Help
You can keep beating yourself up, but does that solve the problem? Eventually, you have to come to the realization that none of that is actually effective at solving whatever hasn’t gone well. What will help is if you assess what happened and look for ways to change that outcome in the future. Moving forward past what didn’t work is far more urgent.
This Isn’t the Only One
If you really want to get to the nitty-gritty, though, you have to face up to the fact that this is not going to be the only mistake you make as a caregiver. You’re a person and you’re going to be faced with new situations and new choices constantly. Sometimes you’ll knock it out of the park and sometimes you won’t. Instead of demanding perfection from yourself, it’s important to pay attention to how you handle those moments.
One mistake or a bunch of mistakes don’t have to be the end of the world when you are a caregiver. Most people, including caregivers, learn from doing and from getting things wrong. Take each situation as a learning experience and don’t be too hard on yourself.
