Home Health Care: 5 Activities To Do With A Senior Loved One With Alzheimer’s
Home Health Care: September is World Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.
It’s a great time for the families and caregivers of seniors with Alzheimer’s to learn more about how to best care for their senior loved ones and connect with them. Sometimes family members and caregivers get frustrated when their senior loved ones can no longer participate in conversations or do the things that they used to be able to do, like follow the story on a TV program. The key to spending quality time with a senior loved one who has Alzheimer’s is finding activities that you can do together which will give your senior loved one a joyful moment. As their Alzheimer’s progresses your loved one will be living from moment to moment being present only in that moment. Some of the activities that you, or a Home Health Care provider, can do with a senior who has Alzheimer’s are:
Go For A Walk
A simple walk can be a profound experience for someone with Alzheimer’s. They may not know where they are, even if it’s someplace they have been a million times, but they will know the sun is shining, the breeze is cool, and the sky is blue. Those sensory inputs will be enough to make them experience a moment of pure happiness. And being with them will make you appreciate those small moments more as well.
Listen To Music
Listening to music can transport people with Alzheimer’s back to a meaningful moment in their lives or just give them a moment of bliss listening to the perfect combination of notes. Sometimes the best activity you can do with a senior loved one that has Alzheimer’s is listening to a piece of their favorite music with them. Just sitting and listening and being present in the moment is a wonderful thing to share.
Take A Drive
Many seniors with Alzheimer’s love going for rides in the car. If your senior loved one gets upset or irritable with you or with a Home Health Care provider taking them for a drive can change their mood quickly. The motion combined with the scenery whooshing by and the bright sky that they can see from the car window can work together to put them in a great mood. Just don’t expect them to remember particular places. If they do remember something that’s great, but don’t expect it. Just enjoy the experience of driving with them.
Look At Art
Color, texture, composition, and medium make each piece of art unique. But it’s the way that your senior loved one’s brain interprets those things that makes that art meaningful to them. Looking at sculptures or paintings can immerse your senior loved one with Alzheimer’s in a world of color and joy. Take your senior loved one to a gallery or exhibit and let them choose what art they’d like to experience.
Home Health Care: Watch The Sunrise
Sit with your senior loved one outside just before sunrise with a hot coffee or tea, or some juice. Just sit together and watch the sunrise. Both of you can just enjoy the beauty of nature and the joy of being together.
