Senior Health: Why You Should “Eat Real” Not Just on National Food Day
Senior Health: National Food Day was created in the 1970s to bring attention to the commercialization of the agricultural industry and the impact it had on the American diet.
By 1977, it came to an end due to a lack of funding. It was revamped in 2011. It’s taken off as a day to make improvements in the diet. On October 24th, learn why you should “Eat Real” and keep that change going throughout the year. This can help to keep senior health at its best.
Processed Foods Increase the Risk of Many Chronic Health Issues
Processed foods often contain too much sugar, sodium, or saturated fat. Some have one or two of these unhealthy choices, while others include all three. This increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. It also raises the risk of obesity.
Eating fast food and take is just as bad. Suppose you’ve chosen chicken and broccoli off a Chinese takeout menu. The meal comes with a side of pork fried rice and a vegetable spring roll. Here are the average counts when it comes to fat, sugar, and sodium.
One spring roll has 2 grams of sugar, 7 grams of fat, and 140 milligrams of sodium.
One cup of chicken and broccoli has 6 grams of sugar, 12 grams of fat, and 508 milligrams of sodium.
One cup of veggie fried rice has 2 grams of sugar, 12 grams of fat, and 740 grams of sodium.
It’s recommended that people eat no more than 24 grams (women) or 36 grams (men) of sugar, 44 to 77 grams of fat, and 2,300 milligrams of sodium. If you stick to the correct portion size on your takeout, that one meal is already taking up most of the daily recommendations.
Senior Health: Make Meals At Home
Make that same meal at home. You control the type of rice and can add fiber by using brown rice. You can lower the amount of fat, sodium, and sugar. Bake your spring roll instead of frying them to cut down on fat. That’s the message behind “Eat Real.”
Instead of picking up a burger and fries, stay home and make turkey burgers on whole-grain rolls. Bake sweet potato strips that you’ve tossed in egg whites for healthier homemade fries. Have a fruit salad on the side.
