Elder Care Aides Help With Summer Skin Care
May 23th kicks off National Safe Sun Week. This annual observance was created by MedStar Health to bring awareness to the dangers of spending too much time in the sun. One of the areas they focused on is skincare needs in the summer sun. When your dad heads outside to his gardens, does he take care of his skin? Is he aware of just how long he can be in the sun before he risks a burn that increases his risk of skin cancer? If he likes the outdoors and doesn’t always take care of himself while he’s outside, it’s time to talk about elder care services.
Expert Tips for Skin Care in the Summer
What are the best tips for skincare during the summer?
1. Use Sunscreen
Your dad needs to put on sunscreen before he heads outside. As he applies sunscreen, he needs to time it so that it soaks into the skin for about 15 minutes. He wants to put the sunscreen on in advance.
If he typically goes outside as soon as he’s had his shower and breakfast, he should apply sunscreen before sitting down to eat. Once applied, he needs to remember to apply more sunscreen every two hours or after getting wet or sweating a lot.
2. Choose the Right Sunscreen
The right sunscreen makes a difference. He wants a broad-spectrum lotion that protects against UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF of at least 35. Look for formulas that are safe for sensitive skin and contain ingredients like zinc if his skin often reacts to chemical ingredients.
If your dad insists on a spray, make sure you do your research. In the past, some aerosols have been found to contain cancer-causing ingredients. Plus, people tend not to apply enough for full protection. He needs to apply a spray twice to ensure he has the right coating.
3. Wear Long Sleeves and a Hat
Your dad should dress for the sun. There are companies that make clothing that blocks out sun rays. The clothing is often made from bamboo and has a tight weave that keeps the sun from reaching the skin. That can help him if he hates the feel of sunscreen.
A hat that shades the face and ears is important for protecting the delicate skin of the eyes, ears, and lips. If he can get a hat that has cloth that drapes down to protect the neck, that’s also helpful at keeping the back of his neck from burning.
What Can Elder Care Aides Do to Help?
Elder care aides can help your dad remember to apply and reapply sunscreen. They can provide your dad with plenty of water to remain hydrated. They can also make sure that he comes inside for breaks every now and then.
If your dad needs help carrying his gardening tools or crops, his caregiver can help him. He’ll also have someone there to make sure he never overheats while he’s outside.
Hire elder care aides to help out as often as he needs them. If your dad is outside in his gardens every day, consider having caregivers with him during the afternoon hours when he tends to go out. Call a home care specialist to get started.
