You May Feel Helpless When Your Elderly Mother Refuses To Listen About Her Safety, But You’re Not
Safety concerns surround all of us. Every day.
Most of the time, as younger, stronger, healthier adults, we have a tendency to overlook the risks that run rampant all around us. For aging seniors, though, risks are even greater.
And, they are more pronounced and visible.
You may feel as though nothing you do matters when it comes to your mother’s safety, but you are not helpless. It’s easy to feel that way, but truth be told, there are many things you can do to help your mother improve her safety at home.
But, what if she refuses to listen to you?
A parent is probably reticent to listen to their adult child about their safety. This is true, not because they don’t understand the increasing hazards of everyday life, but they don’t want to admit to their own limitations and infirmities.
Your mother is probably refusing to listen to you not because it’s coming from you, but because if she does, she has to admit to her own shortcomings, limitations, and that can lead to fear of losing independence.
Many adult children encourage their parents to stop doing certain things.
When you have your own adult child telling you to stop cleaning out the gutters, hire somebody to take care of the lawn, or wait for them to change a lightbulb or get something down from the attic, that can be disheartening.
It provides them a sense of losing independence. Nobody wants to feel less than they were before. That could very well be one of the primary reasons your elderly mother is refusing to listen to you about her safety and the concerns you have.
For others, it’s simply a matter of mortality. Your mother is feeling more mortal now than ever before. She is acutely aware of the challenges and limitations of her physical abilities. She understands things are getting tougher and it’s not going to get any better.
Focusing on the safety concerns you bring up is only going to exacerbate those feelings of inadequacy, helplessness, or loss.
It can be difficult and frustrating for an adult child to try and convince their aging parent to listen to them about safety, but be patient.
Unless your mother is in extreme immediate danger, be patient. You can bring up the topics, the concerns, the hazards, but offer reasonable solutions that won’t compromise her independence and autonomy. Eventually, she’ll listen. You have to trust in that.
